Gwent youth badminton re-starts on a high

Gwent youth badminton has re-started at Ebbw Vale on a Saturday morning at Ebbw Vale sports centre from 10.00-1.00 each week. The squad is now up to 32 players from 8-19 ( though there are still a few spaces if you have someone you think maybe good enough for a trial).

The squad have been buoyed by a magnificent home win against Guernsey in the summer, when a youthful Gwent side surpassed all expectations to win 31-14 in the annual match. This was despite several injuries and two late replacements!

This season the county is entering the English youth county championship.    (the shires league), for the first time at U17 level and we have Avon, Shropshire and Devon at home, and Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester away. Devon will be favourites to win this league being ranked fourth in England last season. The Devon home match will be on Saturday 28th. November from 10.30-2.00 should anyone want to support.

Anyone who wishes to either give a hand on a Saturday or suggest a player would be more than welcome!

Gwent juniors take Guernsey by storm

The end of the school term saw the Gwent junior squad leave for Guernsey to play the island team. This is always a highly anticipated event and this year was no exception. Seven boys and seven girls represented the county with many of the Gwent team being considerably younger than their opponents.

A fun tournament was held on the first night which was won by the Guernsey/Gwent pairing of Jordan Trebert/Kate Whiteman.

the day out to Herm was a great success, despite flash flooding and hailstones less than two miles away! The squad plus most of the adults swam so it couldn’t have been too cold!

the match was a closely fought affair with Gwent always just managing to keep their noses ahead after a strong showing in the singles, to eventually come out 24-15 winners.

captain James Ellaway gave a good speech thanking the opposition for their hospitality and close matches.
the team will have benefited from hard matches and will be aware of the challenge to come when Guernsey return in July 2015

thanks must go to the Gwent committee and Jan Pritchard in particular for making this such a successful weekend.

Under 15 Quadrangular Tournament

2014-05-02 09.44.06

Gwent supplied 40% of the Welsh U15 team which came up against very strong competition from Scotland, England & Ireland over the first weekend in May. Well done Tom, Oliver, Katie & Megan.

Gwent Junior Closed Tournament

On May 3rd youngsters turned out for this popular fixture which introduces newcomers to competition alongside players experienced at club, county and international levels. There now seems to be demand for extending the event to include U17s in future.

Brilliant results in Belgium

Olve

A fantastic result for Aimee & Lucie Whiteman in the Easter tournament in Olve. They were delighted with their Silver in the U11 doubles and Aimee added two more silvers to this in the singles and mixed.
Oliver Stansfield produced some sparkling moments reaching the semi-finals in the U13 singles where there was an entry of 64 top European players.
Gwent continues to punch above its weight.

New coaches at Gwent junior squad

The last two sessions have seen Chris and Alison Pritchard start coaching Gwent squad alongside Chris Killick and Alice Palmer, now that Matt has left for Guernsey. We are hoping to invite league clubs to assist next season on a rota basis in order for clubs to develop their own players for the future. If anyone would like to assist weekly on top of this, please let Chris know on Chrispritchar47@ hotmail.com.

Junior Nationals – Gwent Sweep the board in Under 13s

The Yonex Junior Nationals took place on the weekend of 15th & 16th of March in Deeside and, undeterred by the long trip, Gwent players returned with an impressive medal haul.

All the gold medals returned to Gwent at under 13s level with Oliver Stansfield and Aimee Whiteman winning the singles competitions and pairing up in the mixed to win that as well. Elliot Simmonds partnered Oliver in the boys doubles while Bethany Jones and Kelly Yip paired up in the girls doubles to get two further golds.

There was no shortage of silvers either with Iwan Price in the boys singles, Elliot and Bethany in the mixed and Aimee and Lucie Whiteman in the girls doubles. Very creditable third positions went to Dafydd & Iwan Price in the boys doubles who were also placed third in the mixed competition with their respective partners Kelly Yip and Lydia Morris. Bethany added a third place in the singles to her silver in the mixed.

Gwent Mixed Team Cup captain, and club secretary Diane Davies commented “I don’t think in all my time as a PD player that I’ve seen such a successful season, securing the Gwent Mixed Team Cup once more was very hard as we had to play some excellent teams en route, most notably the final vs Abergavenny. Lets hope for more of the same next season. Ladies – we are looking for new players, you are extremely welcome to come along – we won’t bite, I promise.

Newport Men win Division 2 2011-2012

In May Newport badminton club’s Men’s A Team picked up the Division two winners shield. A near perfect season, unbeaten against tough opposition from Oakdale A, Ponthir B, Abergavenny B and Caerleon.

Next year is going to be a big year for us in Division one, a season in which we hope to retain our place in the division and hopefully progress further up the table.
